PPE 476-301: Thinking with Models (Funcke) The primary focus of the course is on understanding, designing, and analyzing simulation models.
Students will come away from the sepoy mutiny course prepared to apply these models in a wide variety of interesting contexts. This course focuses on (1) modern simulation-based metaheuristics and on (2) agent-based simulation models in the social sciences, especially in economic, in commercial and in strategic (game-theoretic) contexts. On the metaheuristic side, we focus on evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, as applied to constrained optimization problems, which are prevalent in business practice. We will begin with readings relating to the foundations of just war theory, both classical and contemporary in nature. We will then address a number of topics relating to current debates in personality national security policy, such as the legitimacy and legality of recent surveillance practices, the biography ethics of leaks, defense strategies such as the expanding use of drone warfare, the implications of personality, new weaponry such as autonomous weapons systems and other robotic-based technologies, the current extent and nature of dr king, classification practices and debates about transparency and secrecy in cattell government, the threat of novel forms of war such as cyberwar, biological warfare, the nature of the Presidential war-making power, the role of the other branches in site government in participating in war-related decisions, and related themes.
